CHAPTER

TEN

Inside the closet, Cal Robertson stood wearing a pair of SpongeBob boxers and a t-shirt that said, “I Pee Outdoors.” He had an aluminum baseball bat poised over his shoulder, and his eyes looked like eggs over easy as he cast his gaze all around the room. Honestly, I couldn’t tell if the kid was going to piss himself or bolt.

“I kn-know you’re there,” he stammered. “I c-c-can suh-sense you.”

Cal’s knuckles blanched as he tightened his grip on the bat. His pupils were dilated, his jaw clenched, and based on the tension in his shoulders, he was going to start swinging any second. I quickly considered my options and made a snap decision, gambling on the impression I’d made of the kid earlier as I was coming down the hall.

“Easy, Cal,” I said, willing the cloak to allow my voice to be heard. “I’m going to let you see me, so don’t freak out.”

I swept the cloak off my shoulders, tossing it into my Bag. As recognition dawned in Cal’s eyes, his face contorted in a mask of shock and horror.

“It’s y-you. You’re the g-guy who killed Alpha.”

I ripped the sunglasses and wig off my head. “Man, I told Emma this disguise sucked.”

The kid shook the bat over his shoulder menacingly, doing his best to make it look like he was ready to throw down.

“Don’t c-come any c-closer!” Cal said, his voice trembling.

I waved my hands placatingly, hoping to calm the teen down. Instead, the gesture had the opposite effect. Cal immediately retreated, keeping his full attention on the ionic hand cannons that I’d pointed in his direction. In so doing, he tripped over his feet and fell backwards into the closet.

“Oh, good gravy,” I said. “If I wanted to hurt you, I’d have done it while I was still invisible.”

Covering his face with one hand while hanging onto the bat with the other, he peeked out between his fingers. “Before you k-kill me, cuh-can I at least cuh-call my muh-mom?”

“Did you not hear what I just said? I’m not going to disintegrate you, or anyone else for that matter.” I reached out to lend him a hand. “Get up. All I want is a copy of that clip you uploaded of my fight with Alpha. The entire video, that is.”

“Y-you’re not going to k-kill me?”

“No.”

“Even after I give you what you wuh-want?”

“I might if you keep making me repeat myself. Now stand up already, will you?”

Cal exhaled slowly, blowing his cheeks out as he did so. Still clutching the bat, he grabbed my hand firmly, allowing me to pull him to his feet. As soon as he stood upright, I stepped back to give him some space.

“Nice room,” I said as I swept my gaze over his personal refuge. “Very neat.” A photo on his bulletin board caught my eye—an action shot of a red-tailed hawk in flight. “Did you take this?”

“Yeah, on a scouting t-trip last year.”

“Nice work.”

“Thanks, I guess?” Obviously, Cal didn’t expect Alpha’s killer to be this jovial.
